Irish animation company Cartoon Saloon is teaming up with Canada's Aircraft Pictures to bring The Breadwinner, Canadian author Deborah Ellis' children's book about life under the Taliban, to the big screen.

Screen Daily reports that Nora Twomey, who co-directed Cartoon Saloon's The Secret of Kells, will direct the film, with production expected to start in Ireland and Canada this year.

First published in 2001 and spawning three sequels, The Breadwinner tells the story of Parvana, a young girl in Afghanistan who must disguise herself as a boy to support her family following her father's imprisonment.

Author Ellis has adapted her novel for the screen with director and screenwriter Anita Doron.
