The Central Bank has released a new €10 coin celebrating the life of Irish tenor John McCormack.

The collector's edition coin is being officially launched today at a ceremony in Dublin and representatives from McCormack's home town of Athlone will be present at the occasion.

Just 8,000 commemorative coins are being made and will go on sale via the Central Bank website for €44.

The coin is being launched as part of the European Silver Programme, which sees European Mints issue a commemorative coin on a number of various themes.

The theme for 2014 is European Musicians and McCormack was the chosen nominee for Ireland.
