Acclaimed British filmmaker Ben Wheatley will direct the opening two episodes of Doctor Who season eight.

Screen Daily reports that the director of horror thriller Kill List and psychedelic English civil-war flick A Field in England, will be the first to work with new Doctor Peter Capaldi, with the episodes to air early in 2014.

“I am very excited and honoured to be asked to direct the first two episodes of the new series of Doctor Who,” said Wheatley, who added the inevitable: “I've been a fan since childhood.

“I'm really looking forward to working with Peter Capaldi and finding out where [showrunner] Steven Moffat is planning to take the new Doctor.”

Wheatley's CV includes 2012's Sightseers and episodes of BBC3 comedies Ideal and The Wrong Door. A Field in England starred Reece Shearsmith, who will play Patrick Troughton in the Doctor Who 50th anniversary drama biopic An Adventure in Space and Time.

Doctor Who returns to BBC One for its 50th special The Day of the Doctor - starring Matt Smith and David Tennant - on Saturday, November 23.
