She's dated a string of A-list celebrities, so it's hardly surprising that Taylor Swift has said heartbreak has helped her to write some of her biggest tracks.

The 23-year old singer, who has previously been romantically linked to Harry Styles, John Mayer, Ed Sheeran, Joe Jonas, Taylor Lautner, Cory Monteith, Jake Gyllenhall and Conor Kennedy, explained that heartache is her favourite emotion when it comes to writing songs.

Speaking to E! Latin's Coffee Break, Swift said: ''I think when you're heartbroken you need music more than when you're not.''

She added: ''There's something so beautiful about people who are heartbroken; they think about how they're feeling much more. I think when you're happy and when you're in love, you don't need to think about it, it's just there.

"Love is one of those things that is so simple, you don't need to think about it when it's good, you only need to think about it when it's bad, so when music is all that you have and you're lonely or you're missing someone and you write a song that says exactly how you feel, there is sort of a gratification you get from that, it almost helps you move on.''

The I knew You Were Trouble star also revealed that her next big goal will be writing a follow up to her hit Red but she won't start thinking about a new album for another six months.

She further pitched in: ''I think it's important to give yourself time to just stop writing. I've been writing here and there but when I'm making an album I'm writing every day. You need to just take a second to clear out your brain.''
