Spice Girl Mel C has been named as Tesco 'Celebrity Mum of the Year'.

The singer, 39, said she was "proud and humbled" by the accolade, which will be awarded to her at a ceremony next month.

The singer, real name Melanie Chisholm, gave birth to her first child with partner Thomas Starr, a girl they named Scarlet, in 2009. The couple were together for ten years before they announced their split last July.

Speaking about the award, the singer said: "There are millions of inspirational mums out there, doing incredible things to help others, so it's fantastic to be involved with something that celebrates this".

"I'm so much happier, more confident and courageous and it's all thanks to Scarlet. Being with my family is the most important thing in my life".

After a whirlwind year which saw The Spice Girls perform at the Olympics closing ceremony, contribute towards a musical based around the band's songs and participate in a documentary about their success, Chisholm says "It is sometimes difficult to find a balance with work and other commitments".

"I make sure I treasure every second", she added. "Being a mum might not be easy, but it's definitely the most rewarding job in the world."
