It's been reported that Sherlock season three will go into production later than expected.

According to Entertainment Weekly work on new episodes of the hugely popular modern take on the classic detective was due to begin in January, but will now start in March.

Sources claim the change was necessary to accommodate the busy schedules of Benedict Cumberbatch, who is in Star Trek 2, and Martin Freeman, who has been filming The Hobbit.

The knock-on effect will be that Sherlock's upcoming season will premiere in late 2013, rather than in August, as had previously been stated.

The BBC is yet to officially announce the show's UK return date but a spokesperson for American broadcaster PBS said Sherlock is likely to air in the US in either late 2013 or early 2014.
