Lenny Kravitz has emerged as the frontrunner to play Marvin Gaye in a new biopic about the soul legend.

The London Evening Standard reports that director Julien Temple has named the American rocker as his first choice in the upcoming biopic.

The film will explore the latter years of Gaye's career, detailing his battle with alcoholism and the recording of the Midnight Love album, which includes the classic Sexual Healing.

Kravitz is no stranger to acting, and recently playing Cinna in The Hunger Games, a role he will revive in the forthcoming sequel Catching Fire.

Julian Temple is currently seeking financial backng for the Marvin Gaye project.
