Irish actors Cillian Murphy and Domhnall Gleeson are among the nominees for this year's British Independent Film Awards.

Murphy and Gleeson are nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category; Murphy for Broken and Gleeson for his performance in Shadow Dancer.

Broken leads the awards with nine nominations, including one for Dublin writer Mark O'Rowe for Best Screenplay.

Completing the Best Supporting Actor shortlist are: Billy Connolly (Quartet), Rory Kinnear (Broken) and Tom Wilkinson (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel).

The nominees for Best Actress are: Judi Dench (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), Elle Fanning (Ginger & Rosa), Alice Lowe (Sightseers), Andrea Riseborough (Shadow Dancer) and Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady).

The Best Actor nominees are: Riz Ahmed (iLL Manors), Toby Jones (Berberian Sound Studio), Steve Oram (Sightseers), Tim Roth (Broken) and Terence Stamp (Song for Marion).

Olivia Colman (Hyde Park on the Hudson), Eileen Davies (Sightseers), Alice Englert (Ginger & Rosa), Vanessa Redgrave (Song for Marion) and Maggie Smith (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) are the nominees for Best Supporting Actress.

Berberian Sound Studio, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Broken, The Imposter and Sightseers are nominated for Best British Independent Film.

Bart Layton (The Imposter), John Madden (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), Rufus Norris (Broken), Peter Strickland (Berberian Sound Studio) and Ben Wheatley (Sightseers) are nominated for Best Director.

Layton and Norris are also nominated for the Douglas Hickox Award for Best Debut Director along with Rowan Athale (Wasteland), Ben Drew (iLL Manors) and Sally El Hosaini (My Brother the Devil).

Amour, Beasts of the Southern Wild, The Hunt, Rust & Bone and Searching for Sugar Man are nominated for Best International Independent Film.

The winners will be announced in London on December 9.
