John Mayer has been ordered not to sing for six months after undergoing throat surgery last week.

The Your Body is a Wonderland singer underwent an operation to remove a granuloma from his vocal cords last week.

Mayer, who was recently linked to Firework singer Katy Perry, has since opened up about his medical issues in a post on his Tumblr blog.

He wrote: "Well, here I am. Silent for the next few months, no singing for probably six, but all signs point to this being the last step in getting to perform again. Back to notebooks and iPad to communicate for the time being. Zen living at its finest... so if you see me out and about and I don't answer you when you say hello, I'm not ignoring you. Promise."

He added: "I'll try and post more on here, but I've gotten really good at keeping my thoughts to myself and I don't exactly see anybody starving for my take on things. But it might be fun to offer some kind of window into this very odd and slightly beautiful time...

"I know I'm not the only person hoping that six months from now they'll have a chance to do what they love so much, so good luck with your thing too."
