The music video for Justin Bieber’s single, Boyfriend, has shattered YouTube record for single-day views.

The clip racked up 8 million hits within 24 hours of being made available for streaming.

Those figures were fuelled by a campaign mounted by Bieber’s Twitter followers - now numbering well over 21 million, second only to Lady Gaga - to make Boyfriend the most popular offering ever posted to the video-sharing site.

It’s not the first time that the Canadian teenager has made record headlines. His first album, My World, was released in 2009 and quickly went platinum, establishing him as a worldwide heart-throb. Baby, the first single from his follow-up album My World 2.0, is currently YouTube's most-viewed video of all time and in total he has sold more than eight million albums.

In an interview with MTV News Bieber described his latest track which chronicles the false paternity accusations made against him by Mariah Yeater last year, as his Billie Jean.

"At the end of the day, I'm human, and I go through the same problems as you guys do," Bieber told the network.

"The whole baby situation, where they said I had her baby - totally not true, by the way - I wrote a song about that. It's kind of my Billie Jean."
