British actor Henry Cavill is engaged to marry his longtime girlfriend Ellen Whitaker.
Cavill is best known for his role in the hit TV show, 'The Tudors', which was filmed in Ireland. He has also been cast in the lead role in the next Superman movie, 'Superman: The Man of Steel' which is due to be released at the end of 2012.
His representative confirmed the engagement to People.com and according to the Belfast Telegraph he popped the question while the couple were on a recent trip to Hollywood.
It quotes Whitaker, who is a showjumper hoping to compete in the 2012 Olympics, as saying "I couldn’t believe it when he asked me to marry him. I thought we were there to celebrate his birthday. It was such a surprise and I am so happy."
The report also says that Cavill, who celebrates his 28th birthday today, asked Ellen’s father for permission to marry his daughter.
