The nominations for the 82nd Academy Awards have been announced, and there is Irish interest in a number of categories.

The Tomm Moore-directed 'The Secret of Kells', which features the voices of Brendan Gleeson and Mick Lally, is nominated in the Best Animated Film category along with 'Coraline', 'Fantastic Mr Fox', 'The Princess and the Frog' and 'Up'.

Director Nicky Phelan and producer Darragh O'Connell's 'Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beauty', written and performed by comic Kathleen O'Rourke, is among the Best Animated Short Film nominees.

Juanita Wilson and James Flynn's 'The Door' is nominated for Best Short Film (Live Action).

'Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beauty', 'The Secret of Kells' and 'The Door' all received funding from RTÉ, alongside other bodies.

Dubliner Richard Baneham is among the Oscar nominees in the Best Visual Effects category for his work on 'Avatar'.

Peter J Devlin is among the nominees for Best Sound Mixing for his work on 'Star Trek'.

Jeff Bridges ('Crazy Heart'), George Clooney ('Up in the Air'), Colin Firth ('A Single Man'), Morgan Freeman ('Invictus') and Jeremy Renner ('The Hurt Locker') are nominated for Best Actor.

The nominees for Best Actress are: Sandra Bullock ('The Blind Side'), Helen Mirren ('The Last Station'), Carey Mulligan ('An Education'), Gabourey Sidibe ('Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire') and Meryl Streep ('Julie & Julia').

The nominees for Best Supporting Actress are: Penélope Cruz ('Nine'), Vera Farmiga ('Up in the Air'), Maggie Gyllenhaal ('Crazy Heart'), Anna Kendrick ('Up in the Air') and Mo'Nique ('Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire').

The nominees for Best Supporting Actor are: Matt Damon ('Invictus'), Woody Harrelson ('The Messenger'), Christopher Plummer ('The Last Station'), Stanley Tucci ('The Lovely Bones') and Christoph Waltz ('Inglorious Basterds').

Nominated for Best Director are: Kathryn Bigelow ('The Hurt Locker'), James Cameron ('Avatar'), Lee Daniels ('Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire'), Jason Reitman ('Up in the Air') and Quentin Tarantino ('Inglourious Basterds').

The nominees for Best Film are: 'Avatar', 'The Blind Side', 'District 9', 'An Education', 'The Hurt Locker', 'Inglourious Basterds', 'Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire', 'A Serious Man', 'Up' and 'Up in the Air'.

'Avatar' and 'The Hurt Locker' lead the nominations with nine each.

The nominees for Best Foreign Language Film are: 'Ajami', 'El Secreto de Sus Ojos', 'The Milk of Sorrow', 'Un Prophète' and 'The White Ribbon'.

The Oscars take place on Sunday, 7 March and will be shown on RTÉ Two on Monday, 8 March.
