Oscar-winning director/producer Steven Spielberg may be planning to remake 'Mary Poppins', the classic 1960s musical about a magical nanny.

Spielberg has reportedly approached Richard Eyre, the director of the London stage show of 'Mary Poppins', about heading up the project.

Eyre said that he has had discussions with Spielberg about a new film version.

"We've talked about it a lot," Eyre is reported as saying. "It will be hard to outdo the original, but kids love the story and I'm sure that the remake will be a real success."

Eyre, best known for his award-winning work in theatre, has directed several films, including 'Stage Beauty' and 'Iris'.

He is currently filming 'Notes on a Scandal' which stars Cate Blanchett and Judi Dench.
