Chris Columbus, director of the first two 'Harry Potter' movies, is to bring Marvel Comics hero the Sub-Mariner to the big screen.

The Sub-Mariner, a half-man, half-amphibian Prince from Atlantis, is one of Marvel's oldest characters, making his first appearance in print in 1939.

The Hollywood Reporter says that the film is planned as an epic that will feature creatures, species and worlds beneath the oceans.

Columbus is currently preparing to shoot the movie adaptation of hit musical 'Rent' and will begin work on 'Sub-Mariner' when that film is completed.
