The nominees for the 2004 MTV Movie Awards have been announced, and Irish actor Cillian Murphy is on the list.

He is nominated in the Breakthrough Male category for his performance in '28 Days Later', with Shawn Ashmore ('X2: X-Men United'), Shia LaBeouf ('Holes'), Ludacris ('2 Fast 2 Furious') and Omarion ('You Got Served') also in contention.

'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' leads the shortlist with six nominations.

Its star, Johnny Depp, is nominated for Best Male Performance and is joined by Jim Caviezel ('The Passion of the Christ'), Tom Cruise ('The Last Samurai'), Bill Murray ('Lost in Translation') and Adam Sandler ('50 First Dates') on the shortlist.

Drew Barrymore ('50 First Dates'), Halle Berry ('Gothika'), Queen Latifah ('Bringing Down the House'), Charlize Theron ('Monster') and Uma Thurman ('Kill Bill: Vol 1') are the nominees for Best Female Performance.

The nominees for Best Movie are: '50 First Dates', 'Finding Nemo', 'The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King', 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' and 'X2: X-Men United'.

Other categories include Best Villain, Best On-Screen Team, Best Kiss, Best Fight and Best Action Sequence.

The awards take place in Los Angeles on 5 June.
