The late Irish actor Richard Harris was honoured with a specially created acting award at the British Independent Film Awards in London last night.

The award, for outstanding contribution to film, was accepted by Harris' granddaughter Ella and three sons, Damian, Jamie and Jared.

Harris had been nominated for Best Actor for his role in 'My Kingdom', but lost out to James Nesbitt for his role in 'Bloody Sunday'.

72-year-old Harris died from Hodgkin's disease last Friday.

Former Beatle George Harrison also received a posthumous lifetime achievement honour for his contribution to British film.
