A comedy starring Adam Sandler has knocked Tom Cruise's 'Minority Report' from the top of the US film charts in its first week of release.

'Mr Deeds' grossed $37.6 million, knocking 'Minority Report' into third place ($21.6 million). 'Lilo & Stitch' remained at number two with takings of $22.2 million.

Sandler stars opposite Winona Ryder as a small-town guy who inherits $40 billion in the remake of 'Mr Deeds Goes to Town'.

'Men in Black II' is expected to take the number one place on the chart when it debuts next weekend.

'Minority Report' is due for release in Ireland this Friday, 5 July.
