Will Young, the winner of the ITV 'Pop-Idol' programme has hit number one in the English single charts with the fastest selling debut in history.
His single – a double A-side 'Anything Is Possible/Evergreen' – sold 1.1 million copies in just one week. It outsold the number two single, Shakira's 'Whenever, Wherever', by twelve to one.
Young beat 10,000 other hopefuls to win 'Pop Idol' with more than 4.6 million votes.
However, despite his chart-topping success, Young may not appear on 'Top Of The Pops' because of a row between his record label and producers of the music television show.
Record company BMG were insisting that Young sing both tracks from the single but 'TOTP' producers are adamant that he will only be allowed to sing one song. A video of Young may be substituted for a live appearance.
A spokesman for the show said: "It's a very sad day for pop music but the door is still open for Will. We would love to have him on the show as long as the record company drop their unreasonable demands."
