JK Rowling, the creator of Harry Potter, was honoured today at the inaugural Whitaker Gold and Platinum Book Awards.

Rowling's books about Potter, a young wizard at boarding school, are credited with encouraging thousands of children to rediscover reading. The books have dominated the bestseller lists for the last four years.

Rowling picked up platinum awards, representing sales of more than one million copies, for each of her four Harry Potter books.
