The RTÉ Authority has discussed the recent reports of proposed major changes to the Broadcasting Bill being drawn up by the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and The Islands. A spokesman said that the Authority is greatly concerned about the implications the changes would have for RTE, and is seeking an urgent meeting with the minister, who is visiting the US at the moment.

Amendments to the Broadcasting Bill are believed to include the selling of RTÉ's current transmission network on the open market and the exclusion of RTÉ from having a shareholding in the company, which would build and control the new digital system. Until now, the government had intended RTÉ would have a 40% stake in that company. The bill is due to come before the Cabinet.
