Sean Keating's painting Men of the South is an iconic image of the War of Independence – it depicts six men in profile, armed and dressed for battle.

The Crawford Art Gallery in Cork is marking the painting’s centenary with a special exhibition, As They Must Have Been, which places Men of the South in context while seeking to draw out stories of the individuals depicted, the wider theatre of war, and the circumstances surrounding the making of a masterpiece.

The exhibition also provides audiences with a rare opportunity to encounter Men of the South with Keating's companion painting, 1921 – An IRA Column.
