Early memories of that feeling when you've waited long enough for a box of records to come into your favourite shop... Sadly, Abbey Discs is long gone from Liffey Street in Dublin, mixed up with the reality that back then you barely had money for a tea. Knowing the Murray boys behind the counter, I was reliably informed that the new Prodigy record called Charly with a better b-side was due in; it was on a label I'd never heard of called XL. I was hopping from one foot to the other - the simple graphics, the colours and the bold type just added to the fact I loved collecting records. Part of the Beggars Group and predominantly electronic in its output, here are my favourite releases on the XL label.

Adele - Rumour Has It

As a DJ playing in club culture mostly, I would consider a more underground soulful sound my chosen style; I don't naturally gravitate to Adele. She is, however, a fantastic artist at such a young age to have written herself into music history forever. Do we not consider Ella Fitzgerald and Etta James on a list of untouchables, mavericks? Is Adele not an equal? Rumour Has It has a very Northern Soul touch.

Ibeyi - Made of Gold (Feat. Pa Salieau)

Out of Paris, France. Ibeyi, meaning twins, are Afro Cuban in origin, using bàtá drums and cajon to combine future beats and early influences from Yoruban sounds. Worth checking out is their soundtrack music from How to Stop a Recurring Dream.

Kaytranada - Be Careful (Feat. Thundercat)

Previously known as Kaytradamus, Kaytranada has quickly established himself as a super producer. He hasn't released anything mediocre. Instead, it's all fresh, and he cleverly teams up with collaborators of note, this time Thundercat, equally known for his unique productions and style.

Låpsley - Our Love is a Garden

Known for her highly infectious track Operator, as remixed by KOZE on everyone's playlist at every house party, but on closer inspection, there's more to discover. From her release Through Water, this track is lush and futuristic with gorgeous harmonies.

Smerz - Rain

Catharina Stoltenberg and Henriette Motzfeldt are in Copenhagen making music after meeting in college and deciding to leave their studies to make music; their influences are classical but with a heavy electronic edge. They could be appearing soon at an art gallery near you.

Yaeji - What We Drew

This Korean-born American DJ and producer came to my attention when I found her remix of Drake's Passionfruit, a clever gentler rework that I prefered to the original. This release on XL recordings sees her slip back into a more experimental sound, taken from the 2020 album of the same name.

Overmono - Bby

This sibling duo had a respectable reputation leading up to 2016. Check out Truss (very tough techno) and Tessala, which has a more complex, more breakbeat feel to its releases, on the labels Perc Trax and R&S of Ghent. Overmono is a warmer sound that builds cleverly, upfront and relentless.

Radiohead - Everything in Its Right Place (Gigamesh remix)

Reeling with a great deal of sadness after watching Get Back, that great film about the last days of The Beatles. I wondered if anyone else could instill such feeling, then it would be Radiohead, maybe this would be a film about them imitating George Harrison, eating toast, and their time recording Kid A. Wouldn't that be mesmerizing?

Baba Stilz - Maze

There's a coolness from electronic music out of Stockholm, Sweden, and it's clear to see the calm influence of surrounding DJ's dreamy folk-pop and maybe even lo-fi production and stylings from US street culture. Be careful casting dispersions. No one puts Baba in the corner.

Jai Paul - Do You Love Her Now

XL's founder Richard Russell once said that Jai Paul was a wizard. Uncontrived, lush and classy, his work has had its own unconventional story and journey. It all reminds me of Kenny Dixon's Moodymann or Madlib, just on the hip-hop side.

Arca - Andro

Previously Nuuro, Arca from Venezuala is an artist with a unique sound and aesthetic. Collaborations with Bjork, Kanye West and FKA Twigs, amongst many others, has established her voice and intent on an ever-changing and eclectic musical landscape, both visually and aurally stunning.

MssingNo - Fones

Repeated beats, trap-like and text aside text like a fetish for old photocopier toner, XL always kept its eye on one-off releases, a test pressing lying around on the office couch. Fones was released in 2015 and has an ethereal vocal floating over its runtime. Very little is known about MssingNo.
