The RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra launches its 2021-2022 Season with three Friday evening concerts in September at The Helix featuring larger scale symphonic works, international artists and a Culture Night performance featuring Tommy Tiernan.
All three concerts will be live-streamed here on RTÉ Culture and broadcast live on RTÉ lyric fm on Fridays at 7.30pm. Paul Herriott presents.
Chief Conductor Jaime Martín conducts the first two concerts, starting on Friday 10th September with high drama, heart-on-sleeve emotion and a luscious display of watercolour brilliance with Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, Tchaikovsky’s only Violin Concerto – with 'the brilliant’ (New York Times) Baiba Skride as soloist – and, marking the 110th anniversary of the birth of one of the great unsung innovators of Irish music, Frederick May’s last work, Sunlight and Shadow.
Martín’s second concert on Friday 17 September is an all-Russian one for Culture Night featuring Prokofiev’s enchanting Peter and the Wolf – narrated by comedian and chat show host Tommy Tiernan – and Tchaikovsky’s masterly and deeply humane Fourth Symphony.
The third concert on Friday 24 September sees conductor Mihhail Gerts, hailed by critics for his ‘astonishing precision, highly expressive gestures and warmth’ and as ‘a name to remember’, leading the RTÉ NSO and the ‘sensational’ (Bachtrack) violinist Simone Lamsma in two works that revel in orchestral colour and symphonic heft: the Sibelius Violin Concerto and Dvořák’s Fifth Symphony.
Anthony Long, General Manager, RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra said:
"This season is all about the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra returning to that which symphony orchestras do best: larger scale symphonic repertoire for larger orchestral forces and working with major artists. Equally it will be about us returning to live audiences, with caution and in time.

Continuing to work within social distancing guidelines we are thrilled that we can use both the large stage and the auditorium space of The Helix to accommodate the larger orchestra required for works such as Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, Sunlight and Shadow by Frederick May, Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony and the Sibelius Violin Concerto. We will soon announce additional concerts for the 2021-2022 Season where Brahms, Mahler, Rachmaninov and Shostakovich will return to our world and long-held plans to work with major Irish and international artists will be realised."
