FILM

Yvonne: I loved Nomadland and am a big Francis McDormand fan. A few years ago, I was collecting my key from the reception in a London hotel when I felt someone tug at the collar of my winter coat. I turned around to find Frances Mc Dormand standing there. She said "you had a price tag hanging from your coat" and handed it to me then left. I was both shocked and thrilled at how perfectly eccentric the encounter had been.

MUSIC

We are all big fans of various female-led bands including I Draw Slow, The Wailin Jennys, Joy Williams of The Civil Wars. Also, Juliana says that Sinead O Connor’s voice blows her mind while one of her local favourite albums is Niamh Regan’s Hemet. Ruth greatly admires the raw and honest songwriting of John Prine and Yvonne says she likes to sing LP (AKA Laura Pergolizzi)'s extraordinary song Lost On You to test her voice. We all have eclectic musical tastes and have been known to belt out the odd Prince song!

BOOKS

Ruth: The Kite Runner is a fantastic read. A bit of an older book (circa 2003), but it is so meaningful and emotional. Some of the content is very upsetting but I fell l in love with the characters and their story is unforgettable. Yvonne loves Maybe You Should Talk to Someone: A Therapist, Her Therapist, and Our Lives Revealed by Lori Gottlieb, which is a moving and funny account of a New York therapist’s journey, which is close to Yvonne’s heart as it relates to her day job as a psychotherapist and counsellor.

TV

Juliana loved The Queen's Gambit and how it made her want to learn chess. She thought the main character Beth Harmon was just so interesting and intelligent. Yvonne and Ruth both love small-town shows about relationships like Schitt’s Creek and Yvonne is currently lost in This is Us, while Ruth also enjoys the escapism of a gritty crime drama such as Happy Valley. We all believe the conversations had on the Tommy Tiernan Show on RTE1 are hugely important ones nationally, and though she may be a little biased, Yvonne finds the host very handsome!

PLAY

Ruth recalls seeing an amazing dance performance called Wildflowers by Maureen Fleming from New York. She said she saw it in Aras Eanna on Inis Oirr, where Maureen danced to an original soundtrack written and played live by Colm Mac Con Iomaire. She combined beautiful movement with interesting visuals. It was almost like she transcended this world and went into a spirit world! Mesmerizing. Yvonne usually goes to Druid plays as they are lucky enough to have them based locally in Galway. The last one she saw (pre-Covid) was Tom Murphy’s version of The Cherry Orchard by Chekhov.

ART

There will be an incredible open-air exhibition by 21 esteemed artists including Brian Bourke & Jay Murphy, Mick O’ Dea, Aine Philips, Ger Sweeney, John Behan and Dara McGee to name a few, opening on Inis Oirr on 17th July, where they will each create an original piece of art on a sculpture of a Currach, which will then be displayed on an art trail around the island, free for the public to view throughout the summer.

RADIO/PODCAST

While Juliana drives in her car, she listens to Simply Folk on RTE Radio1 and loves The Irish Music Industry podcast by Mark Graham, as well as the Blindboy Podcast. Every week she also listens to her new local community radio station Cloughanover Sounds, which has shows on Fridays and Sundays featuring musical guests from her local community.

One of Ruth's favourite hours of the week is on Sunday morning when Sunday Miscellany comes on RTE Radio 1 at 9am. It’s a beautiful collection of creativity and is good for the soul! Yvonne is Executive Producer of The Tommy, Hector and Laurita Podcast and we are all huge fans and look forward to hearing every single episode! Tommy’s solo podcast Private Investigations is also a fascinating listen.

THE NEXT BIG THING...

The next best thing will be ‘live’ music and our forthcoming album, which we hope will be completed in time for our gig in The Town Hall, Galway on December 10th followed by a tour of Ireland. Also, Yvonne will be opening the doors to her private psychotherapy and counselling practice in Galway in September, which she is very excited about!
