In failing health, Martin McGuinness resigned as Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland. The former IRA leader had become a key figure in the peace process. His resignation came during an ongoing row with the DUP over a botched renewable energy scheme. As power-sharing in Northern Ireland collapsed, Assembly elections brought little change in the political stalemate at Stormont. Martin McGuinness died in March at the age of 66.

Islamist attacks hit several European cities: 22 concertgoers died in one attack at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester.

In the All-Ireland camogie final, Cork beat Kilkenny by a single point, 0-10 to 0-09. Dublin defeated Mayo in the LGFA final by 4-11 to 0-11.
