For the last few years, photographer David Murphy has been taking photographs of barbershops throughout Dublin - view a gallery above.

Below, David introduces the work.

Barbers have been around for thousands of years. They have been a place of social interaction and regarded highly in communities.

Not only did they cut hair, they also performed surgery and dentistry as well as bloodletting, hence the familiar pole of the red and white pole signs outside barbershops.

I was also drawn to their tools, and the character of each barbershop. A lot of detail and personal charm shines through.

The series is shot throughout Dublin City and Dublin suburbs.
