Loah is an Irish Sierra Leonean singer-songwriter. Since the release of her debut EP This Heart in 2017, her unique blend of folk and soul - which she calls Artsoul - has seen her fanbase grow exponentially

In August she released her single Birthmark and she has just released the track NGLA with Bantum. She performs as the special guest to Paul Brady in the National Concert Hall on November 7th.

We asked her for her choice cultural picks...

FILM

I'm pining for the cinema again but I re-watched one of my favourite films recently, Timbuktu by Abderrahmane Sissako and it's pretty stunning. Set in the gorgeous northern Malian desert. It deals with the complex topic of extremism taking over a local community and it gets quite tragic, but it's expertly crafted with so much warmth and love.

MUSIC

On that same note (no pun intended) I'm listening to loads of Malian and generally West African kora music, especially the album Toumani and Sidiki (both Diabatès, father and son). There's also Musique de Nuit by Ballake Sissoko (kora) and Vincent Segal on cello. Both masterpiece records.

BOOK

Dark Days by James Baldwin. It's a short compilation of three essays on prejudice in the States. It's been chillingly relevant this year.

PLAY

Not quite plays, but I'm really looking forward to seeing anything by the Irish National Opera once things open up again...

TV

I May Destroy You by Michaela Coel. Her writing and performance in this are thoroughly scintillating and the way she can wield comedy and trauma in the same instance, seemingly effortlessly, is an art in itself.

GIG

If I wasn't playing at the Paul Brady gig I would be attending online! Haha, but on a serious note it's a bit strange as gigs can't go ahead, but one of the last gigs I went to was a show my sister Fehdah was playing in London in February. It was a kind of mini-festival and seems so glamorous and luxurious now even though I doubt we felt that it was particularly special at the time. It's so wonderful that we are able to do things online now, we're lucky in that regard.

ART

I got introduced to the work of Nick Cave recently (the sculptor, not the musician!). He's incredible! I've been delving into the film photography of Daena Lawson also and thoroughly loving it.

TECH

Depop - it's a great app to get second hand (or pre-loved!) vintage clothes that regular folks are selling. Very good direct approach to the 'reduce, re-use' motto for fashion.

THE NEXT BIG THING

I actually think that our relationship to socialising outdoors in Ireland could have an amazing future once these really desperate days are behind us. I look forward to extravagant, weather-proof, continental-style outdoor winter festivals in the years to come!
