Singer-songwriter Junior Brother was named Irish Times' Artist of the Year for 2019, and his debut album Pull the Right Rope was nominated for the Choice Music Prize.

JB will perform in the National Concert Hall on Tuesday October 20th at 8 pm, as part of their Imagining Ireland Livestream Series. His special guest on the night is Lankum's Ian Lynch.

We asked Junior Brother for his choice cultural picks

FILM

The Blood on Satan's Claw. This is a folk horror film from the seventies which I think encapsulates rural atmosphere unlike anything I have ever seen or heard.

MUSIC

Slint's Spiderland is an album I will always return to for the unmistakably weird and haunting shadow it casts.

I also really enjoyed Brían MacGloinn's The Ballad of the Stolwijk Rescue. This is a radio ballad which Brían from the brilliant Ye Vagabonds did recently. It is incredibly moving and contains songs which Brían wrote which help to beautifully tell the story.

BOOK

Titus Groan by Mervyn Peake. I've become engrossed in this book's fantastical yet earthy world. Characters and images bloat and contract like cartoons and shadows, and the beautifully worded imagery follows as such.

GIG

Richard Dawson in Whelan's. I attended this gig right before lockdown occurred. It was a beautifully cathartic experience for all involved.

ART

James Hayes. James did the artwork for my upcoming album and any exhibition he is doing soon is highly recommended by me. His work encompasses realistic landscape and nuanced surreality in a way which is moving, familiar and all his own.

TECH

Acast. I have recently downloaded Acast and largely use it to listen to the fantastic Tony Cantwell's Shitshow and The Blindboy Podcast.

THE NEXT BIG THING...

Kieran Mulvihill, a fantastic songwriter from Listowel, Co. Kerry, who everyone reading this now must listen to immediately. His music reminds us earnestly but with a foot in the earth to love our loved ones while we can and while they're still with us.
