FILM

I love all things horror and thriller, the best I’ve seen in a while is The Hole in the Ground, a beautifully shot and just-scary-enough Irish horror. Young James Quinn Markey is a fantastic actor, and he takes the creepy child trope to new levels of complexity.

MUSIC

The new Loyle Carner album, Not Waving But Drowning, has been on repeat all month. I’m also a massive fan of April [Lawlor] who’s just blown up recently. She’s has such a gorgeous quality to her voice and I’m delighted to see her doing well.

BOOK

I’m so busy lately that I haven’t the time to sit down and read, which is the only downside to all the exciting stuff I’ve been at this year! I do get the odd short story in, most recently I’ve read Samuel Beckett’s The End, which is awful sad while being terribly witty.

I also love and champion any story from The Gospel According to Blindboy. They’re absurd, but so embarrassingly relatable at the same time. I love everything he comes out with.

PLAY

The most recent play I’ve seen is also one of my new favourites - Iseult Golden and David Horan’s Class. I saw it in The New Theatre back in October and it’s still fresh in my mind. It was all about class, in both senses of the word - a very well-presented look into class divides, and how they affect learning. The play has had its run, but if you ever get the chance to see Class, I highly recommend it.

TV

I love The Chase. I love anything trivia-related and anything Bradley Walsh-related, so it just does it for me. And honestly, I love playing along to show off - me and my dad get very competitive.

GIG

I’m so looking forward to seeing Roy Ayers in the Sugar Club this June. I’ve seen him there once before and his energy is just unbelievable, the band and the crown and Roy just all come together to give the craziest atmosphere. He has most definitely still got it.

A standout gig I’ve been to was Erica Cody in The Grand Social last month. She’s absolutely killing it with her new music and her live energy is hard to beat. She’s a great talent and I’m excited for more from her.

ART

Joe Caslin’s newest installation in Trinity is so lovely. Beckett side by side with a student with her thesis - a deeply inspired sentiment. The scale of it alone leaves you staring, like many of Joe’s murals, but the detail and the placement of this one just gives it an entirely more significant relevance to me.

PODCAST

I’ve been desperately trying to catch up with all of Molly’s Minutes by the gorgeous Molly Parsons. She has the most incredible line up of guests, a real standout for me being the queen of all things sex positive, Shawna Scott of SexSiopa.ie.

Molly hosts such a wide variety of guests from all different lifestyles, and what I love most about it is that she’s honest about her learning moments. It’s a breath of fresh air and is perfect for easing your way into being educated and informed on everything from the Give Us The Night movement to body safe lube...

TECH

Duolingo is both my own personal hell and my favorite app available. I’m using it (almost) every day to brush up on my cupla focal. I’m so passionate about our teanga and it’s one of very few language learning apps that give you the whole course for free. Our language is our culture and anything that helps me get back to it is a brilliant app.

THE NEXT BIG THING...

A young artist and jewelry maker I adore is Soundless Art (@soundless.art on instagram). Her art is bold and so current, I can’t wait until she’s recognized in the way she deserves. She posts excerpts from her journals, which I can’t get enough of, along with unreal paintings and drawings, and she’s branched out into jewellery. Plus she’s a sound head, who supports art in public spaces. Support local artists!
