Roger Casement fund for ‘starving’ schoolchildren in Connemara

A fund established by Roger Casement to raise money for the provision of school meals to children attending primary school has raised more than £630.

In a letter to the editor of The Irish Independent this week, Casement recalled that he had launched the fund last May when he was shocked by the conditions he encountered in Connemara.

Much of the money has been donated by Irish people who live abroad, including large sums that were raised by the Irish communities in New Zealand and Argentina. An English friend of Casement’s also donated £300.

Casement added that the amount already received was enough to provide the students of Carraroe infant school with a daily meal for the next four or five years.
