Disgraceful conspiracy against Catholics

Published: 26 May 1913

A Jesuit priest has accused Protestants of being engaged in a ‘disgraceful conspiracy’ against Catholics. In a sermon in St. Francis Xavier Church in Dublin, Fr. J. Gwynn, SJ, said that proselytising agents from Protestant-run industrial schools were doing ‘the devil’s work’ by going into slums and trying to get impoverished mothers to give up their children so that they could be raised as Protestants in their institutions. Fr. Gwynn condemned the people who did this work, saying: ‘Down in the slums, in the garrets of tenement houses, in the evenings, in the dark, slinking coward-like behind various pretences, they dragged away poor innocent children.’
