In Dublin National Bike Day takes cyclists on a route past many city landmarks.

In Dublin, paralympian Rosaleen Gallagher cut the ribbon to mark the start of the cycle rally. Organisers described the event as a get to know your city cycle. Particiapnts travel a 30 mile route passing some of the city's best known landmarks. These included the Martello Tower in Sandymount, Kilmainham Gaol and the Wellington Monument in the Phoenix Park.

There were some unusual participants including a cyclist riding a double decker bicycle.

National Bike Day was established in 1978 to promote cycling and to focus attention on its many joys.

Funds raised from events held today around the country are being donated to the Rehabilitation Institute.
