Post primary school students across the country will be eligible for free school transport.
Rail and bus transport services are being ramped up to cater for the 51,000 students eligible for the scheme.
The Department of Education plans to introduce the service on a phased basis over the next three years.
To cater for the increasing number of commuters, CIÉ will use every available bus in its fleet. Around 100 older buses which were recently replaced are now being retained to cater for the new school service. CIÉ is also subcontracting services to owners of private vehicles.
