Time to get your skates on as Smithfield in Dublin is to have an ice rink this winter.

Dublin City Council has plans for the square at Smithfield with the opening of an ice rink over the Christmas period. While it is a temporary event, it may well become an annual event.

It was meant to be the Temple Bar of the northside without the lager swigging louts but apart from the odd open air concert, Smithfield Square has been a non event.

Local people believe the ice rink will be good for the area.

Tom Coffey of Dublin City Centre Business Association says the initiative will attract more people to Smithfield thereby supporting local businesses.
