A new purpose built ultra modern public library opens in Killarney, County Kerry.

The new library was constructed at a cost of £250,000 and has provision for a book stock of 25,000 volumes.

Minister of State at the Department of Trade Michael Begley officiated at the opening ceremony when the library was blessed by the Bishop of Kerry Dr McNamara and the Church of Ireland Rector in Killarney Rev Brian Lougheed.

It is hoped that the library through various extension activities will generate and promote interest in literature, music, culture and all forms of artistic expression.

Over six thousand people are registered as members of the new library. County Librarian Kathleen Browne hopes it will meet the needs of the whole community.
