A sombre Taoiseach voices the sympathies and concerns of the Irish people after the horrific scenes unfolded in the United States.
Speaking at a press conference, Bertie Ahern extends his sympathies on behalf of the Irish people to Richard Haass special advisor to President Bush, to the US State Department, to the US Ambassador to Ireland Richard Egan, to President Bush and to all American people. He also expresses his sympathies to all Irish Americans.
This is a terrible horrendous atrocity which every right thinking person in the world will condemn.
Tánaiste Mary Harney adds,
This is a shocking catastrophe and our hearts go out to the American people and of course to all the Irish in America.
Mary Harney also announces a government helpline for people seeking information about family and loved ones in the United States.
