Delegates arrive at the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin for the opening of the first Golden Harp Festival.

Sponsored by RTÉ the Golden Harp Festival is Ireland's first international television festival based on folk music and folklore. The festival is the brainchild of Controller of Programmes for RTÉ Television Gunnar Rugheimer.

In competition are 32 entries from 22 organisations including the Irish entries Fleadh Ceoil na hÉireann 1965 and Cúirt an Mheán Oíche.

Screenings will take place for the 22 member international jury at the Shelbourne Hotel over a four day period. On the fifth day an awards ceremony will take place at the Gresham Hotel in Dublin.

Delegates arriving at the Shelbourne Hotel represent television networks in Europe, Japan, Australia, the United States and Canada. They are welcomed by RTÉ Director General Kevin McCourt.

A draw to establish the running order of screenings takes place. RTÉ staff member Liz Suttle draws names from a drum and passes them to the Golden Harp Festival jury president, Director General of Danish Television Erik Carlsen.
