Maud Courtney celebrates her 105th birthday.

Maud Courtney née Stanhope was born in London in 1881. As a young woman she was an acclaimed concert pianist. In 1904 she married tea agent Charles Courtney.

By 1911 Maud and Charles Courtney, along with their daughter Kathleen, were living in County Limerick. Since 1978, the Castle Clare Nursing Home in Greystones, County Wicklow has been the place Maud Courtney calls home.

Maud Courtney's longevity could be due to a daily walk and a four course lunch preceded by a glass sherry.

She also enjoys a tipple of brandy however in the interests of her health she gave up smoking at the age of 99.

Maud Courtney outlived Charles by 30 years. She died on the 8 April 1987 at the age of 105 years and 225 days. Her funeral took place at St Mary’s Cathedral in Limerick City.
