Over ten thousand Donnelly Visas for the United States have been issued to Irish people in the past year.

The visa was named after US Congressman and Democrat Brian Donnelly who achieved the enactment of a program allowing individuals to work and live legally in America. The Irish have received more than sixty per cent of the entire allocation of these visas worldwide and thousands more will be issued to applicants from Ireland in the coming year.

The National Youth Council welcomed these figures but still had reservations about the over one hundred thousand undocumented Irish currently living and working illegally in the US.

According to Bill Griffith US Embassy Consul, something in the region of two to three thousand of the visas went to applicants currently residing in the US.
