James Galway and harpist Jean Kelly perform The Christmas Song.
The North Cathedral Cork, officially known as the Cathedral of St Mary and St Anne is the location for a Christmas concert held in Cork’s tenure as European Capital of Culture.
Accompanied by harpist Jean Kelly, virtuoso flute player Sir James Galway performs ‘The Christmas Song’ written by Robert Wells and Mel Tormé and also known as ‘Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire’.
Introduced by host Gay Byrne as a ‘living legend’, Belfast-born James Galway grew up in a musical home. Having studied the flute in London and Paris, he played with orchestras in Britain and Berlin before pursuing a solo career.
In addition to classical music, the James Galway repertoire includes contemporary and Irish traditional music, and he has sold thirty million albums internationally.
He has endeared himself to audiences all over the world, not least at home here in Ireland.
Christmas Carols From Cork was broadcast on 24 December 2005. The presenter is Gay Byrne.
