Liam McHale best known as a Mayo football player is helping to grow the popularity of basketball in Ireland.
Liam McHale has been playing basketball since the age of thirteen and started playing football at seventeen. He has been playing for the Mayo Senior Football team for four years and previously played for the Under-21 team.
It was a great thrill for me because I never thought I'd play for Mayo.
Although Liam McHale is known best as an inter county football player his first love was basketball. He is a basketball coach at his old school Scoil Padraig in Ballina and at other schools throughout Mayo. While height is a benefit for anyone playing basketball there is room for the smaller player. Every team needs at least one player to play point guard.
Basketball player and coach Deora Marsh from Ohio in the USA has been in Ireland for the last five years. He explains that under an initiative to grow the game in this country. American players play for Irish basketball teams. His advice to players is to,
