The Irish Hot Air Ballooning Championships take place above Ballymahon in Longford.

Hot air balloon enthusiasts from across Ireland and England head to Ballymahon in County Longford for the 18th Irish Ballooning Championships.

Weather permitting, the adventurers take to the skies travelling to where ever the wind takes them. There's no steering in a balloon, and so they are dependent upon wind direction.

No steering at all. You just blow in the wind as a free as a bird.

Ballooning is an expensive sport and can cost around £10,000 for the balloon and the basket. It can also be quite dangerous, and the first men to go up in a balloon were considered madmen.
