RTÉ and Newstalk go head to head in the ratings as Sean O'Rourke and Pat Kenny launch new radio shows.

The battle for the radio ratings began at 10.00am with 'Today with Seán O'Rourke' and  'The Pat Kenny Show'.

Sean O'Rourke outlines some of the changes that have taken place on the show with a longer slot and a broader range of topics. Meanwhile, Pat Kenny made his debut on Newstalk. A relieved but happy Pat Kenny spoke to RTÉ News about his first day at the station and his new show.

There were no major cock-ups.

Irish Times journalist Anne Marie Hourihane says both presenters are similar in style and conservative.

They're both men of an age doing a similar format.

The success of both programmes will not be known until listenership figures are published next January.

Pat Kenny had left RTÉ for Newstalk after over forty years with the station. Sean O'Rourke replaced Pat Kenny in the mid-morning slot on RTÉ Radio 1.
