Wexford TD Ivan Yates will not contest the next general election and plans to exit politics.

An official statement from 41 year old Ivan Yates is expected from the Fine Gael TD Ivan who topped the poll in Wexford in the last general election with more than 10,000 votes. The former Minister for Agriculture is thought to be giving up politics to concentrate on his business. 

Ivan Yates was first elected to Dáil Éireann at the age of 21 in 1981, the youngest ever elected TD.

RTÉ News travelled to Enniscorthy to get the reaction of some of his constituents to the news. One man describes the announcement as,

Fianna Fáil TD John Browne expressed his surprise at the news and said he will be disappointed to see Ivan Yates go.
