Just 11 months after the launch of Dublin Bikes, over 1 million bike rides have been taken.

The milestone was reached on 14 August 2010 by an unknown cyclist. The scheme in Dublin is deemed to be one of the most successful with over 5,000 customers using 450 bikes daily. In that time only two of the bikes have been stolen. An estimated 15,000 tourists spending time in Dublin have also availed of the service.

Labour Councillor Andrew Montague, who helped set up the Dublin Bike Scheme, spoke to RTÉ News reporter Ray Kennedy about the success and plans to expand the project across the city, and around the country.

An RTÉ News report by Ray Kennedy broadcast on 15 August 2010.
