The Irish team take pride of place in a crowded papal audience hall in the Vatican in Rome.

Addressing an audience of approximately 8,000, Pope John Paul II makes a special reference to the Republic of Ireland team.

I also greet the members of the Irish Football team... Best wishes to you.

The Pope addressed the audience in six different languages and he had a special word of welcome for each group.

Very exciting for all of us to even have the opportunity to see him let alone to meet him.
