The first female bus driver in Dublin hopes to blaze a trail for other women.

Joan Doran became CIE's first woman bus driver and the first woman on a scheduled run since before World War II. She spoke to RTÉ News about the job, the uniform and the reaction she has received from the male drivers.

Clearly CIE's faltering footsteps along the path of sexual equality have outpaced its awareness of high fashion. That uniform was never meant for the likes of Mrs Doran.

Joan Doran talks about altering the traditionally male uniform and her hope of setting a trail for other women hoping for the opportunity to work as a bus driver.

An RTÉ News report broadcast on 2 May 1980. The reporter is Derek Davis.
