The first demonstration of high definition television (HDTV) in Europe is held at the General Assembly of the European Broadcasting Union in Killarney, Ireland.

At a General Assembly of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) in Killarney Sony give a demonstration of what they believe to be the future of television.

Described as the future of television, there is no way that the advantages of the new technology can be shown on existing television sets.

The main advantage of the new system for the ordinary viewer is quite simply better, sharper pictures.

The Japanese are way ahead of the competition in terms of research into this new technology. In Killarney this weekend, they are displaying the results of their research to the television bosses of Europe. However, it is estimated that it will be at least ten to fifteen years before HDTV comes into operation.
