Saoirse Ronan's dad 'proud of her for who she is'
Saoirse Ronan's dad Paul Ronan has said he was "a bit disappointed" for her that she did not take home Oscar gold on Sunday night, but that he is "proud of Saoirse for who she is, not for any award or her talent as an actor."
Three-time Oscar nominee Saoirse was shortlisted in the Best Actress category at this year's ceremony for her role in Lady Bird, with Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri star Frances McDormand winning on the night.
Though disappointed for his daughter, Fair City star Paul said "losing is the wrong word to use."
"I was a bit disappointed for Saoirse when she lost out to Frances, although losing is the wrong word to use," he said.
"It’s her third Oscar nomination, and that, to a lot of actors would be a dream come true. Each of the three times she was nominated a wonderful actress won the award so I would never say she was robbed or anything like that. She is blessed to be in such amazing company really, and hey, she’s only 24."
Saoirse was previously nominated for her roles in Atonement and Brooklyn, and Paul said the best reward is the increase in work that comes when you are nominated for an Academy Award.
"The great thing about awards and being nominated is the potential work it may bring to you, actors love their job and the best award is more work, good work and experiences in a very competitive field. I’m proud of Saoirse for who she is, not for any award or her talent as an actor," he said.
Paul made his Fair City debut on Tuesday night's episode, and he described his character Anto Collins as a "bit of a Del Boy".
Speaking about his character he said, "Anto Collins seems to be a bit of a Del Boy in a way, always on the make and fiercely loyal to his family. He will have a go at anything really to keep the shillings in his pocket but he’s not a skinflint, he’ll spend it as soon as he gets it. It’s a fun character to play."
Ever since landing the role, Paul revealed that he has been "binge-watching" it, saying, "I would tune in from time to time over the years - I have a lot of friends in Fair City and I’ve been binge-watching it since I got the job."
Fair City continues on Thursday at 8pm on RTÉ One.
