Based on the X1, the X2 is a natural progression for BMW in its development of smaller SUV vehicles. It goes on sale here in March.

The company is promising a car that combines the looks of a coupe with the distinctive profile of of its other X models, from the X1 to the X5. The only surprise is that it took them so long to develop this new model, which should provide competition for the likes of the Range Rover Evoque.

Initially the X2 will be available with just one engine, the 2.0 litre diesel that produces 190 horse power. It will be joined later by a 1.8 diesel and a 2.0 litre petrol engine.  Four wheel drive is optional.

The car goes on sale in March, with prices starting at €43,690. This increases to €46,600 as you move up the range.

Standard equipment from the base model up includes 17 inch alloy wheels, satellite navigation, front fog lights, a powered tailgate and BMW emergency call facilities. We'll have more details nearer the launch time.
